Wow, the old-school fast food joint has been given a design makeover and is looking juicy. BRGR, on 7th Avenue between West 26th and 27th Streets reminds me of the diners I used to love growing up in California, where you could get a great tasting burger or veggie melt and a thick shake, settle down at the counter, and pull an all-nighter studying for a physics exam. But, of course, this is New York, and BRGR pulled all the right design tricks out of their bag, making this chick-lowbrow eatery a totally unpretentious place to nosh on a budget. from the 3-D ish logo to the pop banquettes (hello Herman Miller) to the industrial counter stools, everything right down to the to-go bags is enviously perfect. The burgers are made from organic, grass-fed beef, the shakes made with Ronnybrook Farm vanilla ice cream, and the service is fantastic. W’ll b bck.

Being in the Lower East Side for some guerilla marketing fun and given the swelteringly hot afternoon, it seemed the perfect opportunity to sneak over to Il Laboratorio del Gelato on Orchard Street and treat the EP team to something cool. Between the Lime Mint, Orange, White Chocolate, and Cinnamon that we tried, the winner was certainly the last, refined and subtle: bringing back a little cold-weather vibes in the depths of summer. While there, we couldn’t help but notice the great packaging; what a thoughtful gift a pint of classy ice cream would be in so many circumstances!

The Chinatown Ice Cream Factory is squarely sharing the top of EP’s Ice Cream list with Sundaes & Cones. This little hidden spot in Chinatown has, hands down, the best black sesame ice cream and a killer Oreo scoop to boot. The odors on the streets can be a little randy so I tend to eat up on the spot…

On such a perfect Saturday afternoon I knew a second-rate ice cream experience had to be avoided. Thus the slight detour to Sundaes & Cones on 10th Street in the East Village. This is EP’s official vote for the best watermelon sorbet around - the flavor brings me straight back to summers as a kid in Southern Cali. Topped off with a scoop of subtly starchy Taro Root and I was a pig in mud.

So today, being in Little Italy for a quick steak, we stopped over at Ferrara for a couple scoops of Hazelnut and Torronne gelato. Although torronne normally stands for the beloved sweet Italian nougat studded with almonds, the Sardinians in the city of Nuoro use the word to describe something of great desire. How fitting…
